Big Thicket Biosphere
My music is rooted in the traditional rural music of the Texas Big Thicket, as well as the unique, fragile ecosystem of that biosphere. Folk ballads reflected in my work were generally collected within a small radius of my homeplace.
My works also explore the tension between personal identity and Bible Belt fundamentalism.
Education and Opportunity
As a community college educator, I have developed initiatives to give young composers from diverse backgrounds rare access to professional musicians to develop their musical ideas. My collaborative projects bring together both college and high school students, professional musicians (3G Percussion Group, Loop38 Ensemble), and community musicians (Houston Hispanic Choir, Shimmer Flute Choir).
